alias journal='cd ~/Documents/daily ; cat > "`date`"'

I’ll let you know how it works out for me, but I suspect you’ll be glad you did.

A lovely minimal journal setup from my good friend James. My alias is even simpler:

alias journal='cat > ~/Dropbox/Documents/journal/"`date "+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S"`"'
